Legal, Regulatory and Tax Issues in India’s Gaming Industry
October 04, 2022
The Indian gaming industry is one of the fastest growing sunrise sectors in India. However, it has hitherto operated in a regulatory grey area, due in part to antiquated State-specific laws. 2022 - 2023 will likely shape the future of this industry, as the Government contemplates Central regulations, applicable GST (Goods and Service Tax) on online gaming transactions, and measures to boost industry potential through a national AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics) policy. As the industry stands on the brink of this critical turning point, we discuss key legal, regulatory and tax issues in our paper 'Ahead of the Game.' The paper highlights important considerations for gaming operators, service providers, investors in gaming companies, advertisers, and other stakeholders.
